Ah, so it's a true AFTMA rating, unlike spey line ratings for DH rods?

Yes it is. There is much potential for confusion with switch rods also as some manufacturers use the AFTMA rating and others use the AFTM rating. I personally always find it more practical to look at gramme or grain weight

I came across this which seems complicated but covers the subject well.

It is a very comprehensive guide to lines and how to select them. My problem with Rio is that they do tend to make their lines really heavy. They are very much the market leaders though and will therefore kind of dictate to a large degree how the market develops. A real personal gripe of mine is why on earth they brought out the AFS Outbound? The AFS although not without its failings was not that bad a shooting head system. Shooting heads have a lot of very real strengths and obvious weaknesses. For the same part full Spey lines have a lot of particular strengths and of course some weaknesses. They go and integrate a shooting head and running line and offer people all of the negative aspects of shooting heads and the negative aspects of Spey lines without any of the positives. Then of course other line manufacturers follow them out of market need rather than good practice ?

You will not be disappointed. They are a fantastic line. I stick a Rio single handed Versileader, 7ft long on the end of mine. Rio do not do a floating Versileader so if I want a full floating set up I use a cut down Rio tapered salmon leader. If you cut 7ft off the front end and put a loop on the rear end of it you do not get a stupidly heavy leader. If you cannot find one in a retailer (they are reluctant to stock them as they come in boxes of 12) PM me with your deets and I will post one off to you. I have got millions of them. Cost you nowt of course ;)
I use 5ft trout tapered leader on mine and sometimes a 5ft salmon/steelhead and they seem to do the job. I then have 5ft of tippet on the end. Breaking strain changes depending on time of year (heavy salmon one tends to be on the 8 weight rod and the lighter on the 7 weight) both my rods seem to be rated a little bit light but I have to say after using both of the weights of these lines they are a very useful fishing line when a roll or short back cast is needed ? flies out just need to land a bloody fish this year to give them a proper test ?

Do they overhead cast well too.....not too splashy?

If you release your line too far forward in your delivery stroke and thus do not leave enough room for your line to turn over in the air then inevitably they will turn over in the water and splash. This is of course true of any fly line. Deliver with a high stop and no matter whether you overhead or Spey cast with them they deliver just fine.

Finally tried out my vision vibe 85 7/8. Today for a few hours on the wear...... Holy christ that line can go! I suspect by the tapering and coating it may be made by airflo? And is quite similar to a 40+....But wow what a line, a perfect head taper and a very nice line to handle, fished it off a medium-fast 9ft6 7wt, it can single spey snap t roll cast whatever you want, I think it would also make a fantastic switch line for a switch rod, also a vibe 10. (10m head) which would also be nice. Once I found the sweet spot it was a false cast a shoot miles with an airflo 8ft poly and 5ft of tippet, thanks for the recommendation

Absolutely delighted that you get on with it. They are fantastic lines I have to confess that I feel that they are made by Airflo too. Airflo lines have a certain look and feel about them that does make them stand out from the crowd. I am teaching my fiance to fish and she has learned with a Vision Vibe. I don't tell her but she has become really quite proficient with it. A bit of a cocky cow actually

??? a great line to learn with, the tapering will help alot. Such effortless casting straight off the tip with a little flick, I fished tubes/double no problem. Again I think it will be an honestly unbelievable on a switch rod or a 10ft 6 lake rod ??
