You will catch them on that little beauty. I've done ok with spinning and bait fishing, the fish I have caught have always been around features and shallow waters don't bother the bass. I tried fly fishing for them in the Solent when I was working down there but struggled casting big streamers, they sound like a kite in the wind. I found you need to spend a fair bit of time watching for the right conditions, I've seen hundreds of schoolies behaving like piranhas over the worm beds when they were covered by a big tide and only a few inches of water, other areas fished well as the tide dropped and then close in when the flood was highest. What I did find is Blenny's, small Gurnard and 2" flat fish make up a big part of the diet. They do like old structures that are falling back into the sea

Nice pattern Ian. Should work well. I can’t tell from the picture but have you used UV resin to seal the head/eye area? Well worth it to increase durability and also help with the casting.

As for tactics. Floating line or sink tip in slightly deeper water. Fish near weed beds or rocks or any other structure and strip fast. I’ve had quite a few bass on fly but nothing big. My only decent bass have come spinning off rocks into deep gullies. People do fly fish those spots but it’s not for the faint hearted!

If you see swirling fish, it’s mullet feeding so stick on a diawl Bach or little shrimp pattern in trout sizes. Dead drifted. At least that’s the theory... ?

Thanks for the advice! I'd love to catch a big one, but I'd be very happy with a small schoolie..... And a mullet would be an even bigger bonus!

I haven't sealed the eye with uv resin yet.... I'm waiting on an order from Deer Creek, but stuck the eye onto the side of the fly just for the photo!

I know what you mean, I might go to the Dee on Friday evening for a look around and a few casts. I had a few hours on Wincham Brook last night and caught a nice little wild brownie on a March Brown

It's getting closer but mean while I amuse myself with trout fishing. So I tied some spiders and a dry fly. The fish like the scruffy spiders. Cock Pheasant neck feathers work ok.

Davie McPhail ties loads of really decent flies but no longer fishes. His stuff does catch fish but not for him. Yours on the other hand catch fish and catch them for you. Your flies are at least equal to his also. Maybe even better
