Night time rod.

Thinking of resuming creeping about river banks in the dark , and looking for a 10’ rod in #7.
4 piece preferred.

I’m way out of touch with this type of rod .
Suggestions?

I have a 9ft 6/7 emigma and it’s a nice rod indeed. The enigmas never came in a 4 piece however

The NRX 10ft 7 weight rod has the curious distinction in this day and age of actually being a true 7 weight rod. It is not an 8 or 9 weight rod badged up incorrectly for marketing purposes. With this thought in mind if you stick a true 7 weight line though it then it will love you for it. Go any heavier and frankly thd casts just die. If you wanna try mine then gimme a shout and I will post it to you. They are excellent rods. O ha e the 7,8 and 9 weights. Not because I need them. Just do that I can say that I have almost as many rods as Simon which is of course wrong as Simon has more rods than Dynorod (see that wot I did there then )


If you are able to find one I would give very serious consideration to the Orvis Recon. They were an exceptional rod and dirt cheap to buy. There was a big sale and they were being sold for next to nothing as they were phased out. Very much worth buying a second hand one.


If you want something a little more current then the Vision XO is not a bad old stick progressive through the blank and extremely light in the hand. I am sure somebody somewhere could get you a chunk of discount on one. Its not what you know. It's who you know

If you can lay your hands on an Enigma buy it. You will have to refurbish it or get someone to do it for you but well worth the trouble. Failing that you should look at a Harrison Lorhic 10' 7/8# great fishing rods for sewin. You will have to build it yourself(nice project for the winter) or get someone to build it for you. I've built 2 for myself and 20+ for others(not touting for work) and they all say how nice the rod fishes and plays fish. There is a picture on the 2019 Teifi thread of a client with a 16lbs+ sewin caught on a 9' 6/7# Lorhic. The thing about Harrison rods is if you break a section of the rod even after 10 years or more you are able to get a replacement section as the blanks are made in Liverpool.

I have nothing to do with Harrisons but they are very good rods/blanks.

I have a 10' #7 Guideline LPXE, which is a fine rod on bigger rivers. Might be a bit fast for your taste, but I bought it on the advice of Daz, who used to post a lot on here, and described it as the best all round sea trout rod he had used......he was probably talking about casting big flies and tubes on the Towy.

This year my rod of choice for night fishing on the Clwyd, a small to medium river, has been a 9' 6" #6 Sage SLT, which has a very nice mid to tip action. I often fish it with a #7 line and it easily handles the usual range of flies. Added bonus, it's a brilliant rod for fishing dries and nymphs on Brenig. Got mine off eBay at the start of the season.

Another rod I use on the Conwy, or for daytime salmon on the Clwyd, is a 10' #8 Winston BIIx. A lovely rod, probably faster than the Winstons you are used to, but I love it.

PS I've heard the Enigma is a great sea trout rod, but I've never used one.

I've heard very good things said about Redington rods, who are owned by Sage. I haven't cast any of their rods, but after some research and looking at recommendation of guys on the main Fly Fishing Forum, I'm awaiting delivery of a 8'6" #4 Redington Classic Trout. Should be nice for some dry fly trout and grayling fishing on my local rivers.
They don't do a #7 in the Classic range, but they do in other ranges.

Not yet, I dearly hope Orvis have not performed their usual stunt which is devdlop and sell a fantastic range of rods then supercede them with another model of the same name which is usually twice the price and more often than not only half as good as the original model. They did this with the Helios which was replaced with the Helios 2 which I really didn't like at all.

Not quite what you are looking for, it's totally miles apart. My favourite rod when sea trout fishing is an old Shakespeare Professional. It's 2 piece with a lovely soft action, handles tubes as well as much smaller flies when circumstances dictate. Originally bought as a back-up for my other rods. (As one normally does....don't you?) ?

The enigma rods were the got to for many seatrout fishermen. Does anyone remember the carbotec rods? Thing they where down Exeter way. Nearly bought in back in the day. JJ is still around and catches some serious fish to.
Hes a wealth of knowledge to regarding,sewin,bass,mullet on the fly.

The early rods were on the Dimuru blank which he rated very well.Couple of guys I know have the mk1 but I got MK111's they are great.
He mentioned to me not so long ago about the Carbotec blank, sure it was that one he rated to.

Shakespeare Sigma Supra 10' in #6. Even took a 14.5lb salmon with it in the dark on a tube fly with an #8 line.
