I used to be a member of Rhyl and St Asaph AA, before I left the area 9 years ago. I had only joined the club 2 years earlier, having got into night-time sea trout fishing rather late in life - but I absolutely loved it, and still miss the Clwyd and Elwy. Wern Ddu was my favourite beat; it's quite an easy beat to get around in the dark, with about half a dozen decent pools. The pool at the bottom of the slope down from the carpark is (or was) a good one, but I usually began by walking down to the footbridge, crossing there, and then walking up to the bottom end of the wood. From there, you can fish down two and a half good pools, before crossing back to fish the tail of the long pool. All of these give a good chance of a fish, even to a beginner at night fishing, as I was.
The other beat you should try is Maes Elwy on the Elwy; the weir pool there always had lots of fish showing, which gives you confidence, and I had some good nights there. Conversely, I rarely saw much moving on the Clwyd, but that didn't mean there weren't fish there.
