I've just joined Rhyl and St asaph anglers and live very close to the llanarch Bridge and Wern Du beat. Starting to get to know the river better and more confident fishing at night. I've fished for 20 years or so and I know I'm getting close to my first sea trout on the fly. Any tips out there! I have tried a variety of flies on a floating leader but no cigar so far! Keen to get more water craft under my belt so if any one can teach me a trick or to on the bank I'm there!

Hey, hey hey welcome to the new boy from another new boy. I joined up here a about 3 weeks ago and have to tell you that the welcome has been outstanding. Some really friendly, kind and thoroughly decent people in this Forum. You will not be lacking any advice or help that you need. All you need to do is ask. In return of course we want a photo of your very first fish. Once again welcome here ;)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Both the beats you mention are decent beats, and I'd also recommend the Bodfari beat for sea trout.
The Clwyd can be a tough nut to crack, it fishes well in a clearing flood to spinner and fly, and also fly at night if you can find the fish! The best pools can be heavily fished and often the sea trout don't come out to play until well after midnight.
A floating line should catch fish, but most night fishermen tend to use a sink tip on the Clwyd.......deep and slow was the advice once given to me by an old timer. A 5' polyleader attached to your floater should be ok, try an intermediate and a fast sink one, or ask Shaun in Foxons to recommend one.
As for flies, a lot of people use 1" aluminium tubes, I tend to use size 10 and 8 flies on longshank lure hooks.....Alexandra, Dunkeld, Butcher, Stoats Tail etc, nothing special tbh.
My best advice would be to fish the Elwy instead! I've always had more success at night on the Elwy.....I used to fish Maes Elwy, Gypsy Lane and Pont y Dol beats quite a lot. The Elwy needs water, so it's not fishing well at the moment.

Tightlines and we look forward to hearing some catch reports.

Hay! Thanks for this info! Yes I think having the option to get the flies down to the bottom in the pools is a great idea. I've been reading alot about fishing different depths. I'm going to try and have one out on this section of river before I try another beat. There definitely in there splashing away! Thanks again for this!

Welcome from me too!
I used to be a member of Rhyl and St Asaph AA, before I left the area 9 years ago. I had only joined the club 2 years earlier, having got into night-time sea trout fishing rather late in life - but I absolutely loved it, and still miss the Clwyd and Elwy. Wern Ddu was my favourite beat; it's quite an easy beat to get around in the dark, with about half a dozen decent pools. The pool at the bottom of the slope down from the carpark is (or was) a good one, but I usually began by walking down to the footbridge, crossing there, and then walking up to the bottom end of the wood. From there, you can fish down two and a half good pools, before crossing back to fish the tail of the long pool. All of these give a good chance of a fish, even to a beginner at night fishing, as I was.
The other beat you should try is Maes Elwy on the Elwy; the weir pool there always had lots of fish showing, which gives you confidence, and I had some good nights there. Conversely, I rarely saw much moving on the Clwyd, but that didn't mean there weren't fish there.

Good luck! I hope to hear of your success soon.

Hello Paul!

Wow I'm getting some good insight on here.. Any info on which dropper knot to use that helps eliminate tangles? Going to have a shot at fishing two flies now I'm getting used to the pools.

I use the 4 turn water knot, use the nylon pointing down towards the bottom fly as the dropper. Try a slower and more open casting loop to minimise tangles.....our resident casting instructor might give some better casting tips to avoid tangles.

Success! Bought a new sink tip today and had 2lb sea trout around 12.15 on a tube fly. Lost my net on the last trip so struggled to get it on the bank. Given me a big boost either way! I Thanks for the support! Will keep you posted. Off to buy a net before my next mission ?
