How early do you start?

I don't mean what time of the evening or how dark before you start fishing, but when does your sea trout season start? It seems that most people seldom get out on the water before May / June but I'm curious to know whether anyone has success in the early weeks of the season. I was reading an old blog the other day where an angler on the Towy was getting decent fish from the season opening in April. Is it worth it and do you have a realistic prospect of running into a fish that early?

im probably going to have a go on the Ogmore.
Have landed fish not big during April.
JJ might have some good advice for the Towy.
Especially on the lower stretches but like he said before its not the same river now ?

I wrote to Richard Evans about getting on the Dovey in April, for day time fishing on the upper reaches in a spate, but he said the river doesn't fish before the first big tides in May. I reckon there are some whoppers travelling fast and early that the management would rather left alone. Did you see Ryan Peterson's video for Patagonia: One in Winter? About rare winter steelhead. It made me think of Towy sewin generally.

Night fishing starts on the Nith on April 1st and I would expect to catch from the get go, maybe not many but of a good stamp.

Well ordinarily I would be thinking of waiting until June to drive down to West Wales and I'm told that most of the Golden Grove season rods wait until late May before wetting a line. I tend to focus on brown trout fishing until June and then I get fixated on the sea trout. Last season in April I did a couple of short evening sessions on the Towy after a day's trouting on the Usk and I have to admit that I had zero confidence that I would encounter a fish, which probably impacted my manner of fishing and definitely limited the amount of time I spent on the water. But then I came across this a few days ago and it made me think that it would be worth a bit more effort - https://blog.fishtec.co.uk/fishing-the-towy-for-sea-trout Obviously you're not going to encounter the runs that you hope for during the summer months but you are really fishing for one take and if you connect, it's likely to be a good fish. We could all do with a dry spell though to get the rivers down a bit, a lot, otherwise there will be little early fishing done.

Even on later rivers there are occasional exceptions. I remember, some 50 years or more ago, catching a sewin in early April when fishing for trout on the Ogwen, which rarely had fish before June. I was told by another angler that there had been an early run, and many fish had been caught.

With the seasons changing and nature maybe we have to adapt more ourselves to make the most of new rules being imposed on us to try and catch a fish or two.

If the weather is nice still be good to get out and have a recce so not all lost.

I was told when fishing a tidal stretch, the fish appear as early as April, and can go back and forth with each high Spring Tide. If you're not too far from the tide have a go, you never know, subject to height and temerature.

Traditionally in the Briganns Inn days the first fish of the year often use to come from Pen y Bont falls at Mallwyd usually in April, so you could be right. As for me I don't have any sea trout fishing close by but once had a fresh run 2.5 lb'er in February in the middle Severn whilst salmon fishing

The Towy is an early river, Big fish run early. My best was an 11lb'er on April the 14th, at night on fly, on the Cross Hands water on the Towy.
I start fishing seriously April 1st, the date always seems apt for me.

Last two years I have had my first fish of the Dysynni in May, but this year due to the restrictions it will be later. Hoping to get there in June, but with the driving restrictions in place it is by no means certain.
